Last winter I used a dip net near a few culverts and had some success. From reading posts on this site it seems like people actually get in the water and wade around in the shallow grass flats to catch their shrimp up on the mainland. Am I understanding this correctly? I'm cold just thinking about doing that. Wet suit and dive booties with a head lamp? How do you prevent massive damage to the Turtle Grass and Manatee Grass as you shuffle along?

Hi Sea Jazz,

You are correct, we wade around in the shallow grass flats. We wear dive booties but no wet suit. The water isn't cold enough to warrant one most of the time Most of the shrimping happens in the Spring or summer months. There is a winter season but few are brave enough to try the cold water out and almost everyone has caught enough for the year during the spring anyway.

The sea grass is quite resilient. Walking around in it isn't like walking around in regular grass. We've monitored some of the heavier trafficked areas and haven't noticed any degradation over the years.

Thanks for the reply, Richard. I am tempted to try wading after reading about it. I have not ever seen anyone doing anything other than fighting for spots at the best culverts down here in the Lower Keys. Last December I had good luck, same with March. I imagine getting into the grass would be way more productive. Now to get some booties, a wet suit and find a dip net. Nobody has any here.
